About DBS checks
What is the difference between Basic, Standard and Enhanced?
A Basic check shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions and can be requested by any individual. Standard and Enhanced checks show more detail, including spent records, and are only available for roles that are eligible in law. Enhanced checks can also include barred list information.
Do DBS checks expire?
A DBS certificate has no official expiry date. It shows information correct at the date of issue. Employers decide how recent a certificate must be, and the DBS Update Service can keep certain certificates up to date.
Applying
Who can apply for a Basic DBS check?
Anyone aged 16 or over who lives or works in England or Wales can apply for their own Basic DBS check.
What documents do I need?
You will typically need your passport, driving licence or National Insurance number, plus your full address history for the last 5 years. Our guided form explains exactly what is accepted.
How much does it cost?
The official DBS fee is £21.50 for a Basic check and £49.50 for an Enhanced check. Our application support fee is shown clearly before you pay anything. The eligibility check is completely free.
Can I apply for my own Enhanced DBS check?
No. Enhanced checks can only be requested for eligible roles, normally through an employer or a registered body. If you need one, speak to the organisation asking for it, or use our free eligibility check for guidance.

How long does a DBS check take?
Most Basic checks complete within a few working days. Enhanced checks can take longer, particularly where local police forces need to review information.
How will I receive my certificate?
DBS posts the paper certificate to the current address given on your application. Make sure your address details are correct before submitting.
What if the information on my certificate is wrong?
You can dispute inaccurate information with DBS. Contact our support team and we will point you to the right process.
