Safety Resources
Practical guidance on safer recruitment, safeguarding and protecting yourself during the DBS application process.
Safer recruitment basics
DBS checks are one part of safer recruitment, alongside references, interviews and ongoing supervision. Employers should always confirm which level of check a role is legally eligible for before requesting one, and should never ask for a higher level of check than the role allows.
Avoiding DBS scams
- Never share your DBS certificate number or personal details over unsolicited calls or texts.
- Check that any website asking for payment uses a secure connection and displays full company details.
- Be wary of services claiming to offer "instant" DBS certificates. Checks always take time to process.
- Official guidance and direct applications are always available on GOV.UK.
Protecting your personal data
A DBS application involves sensitive personal information. Only provide your details to services you trust, read the privacy policy before applying, and know your rights under UK GDPR, including the right to access and delete your data. See our GDPR Compliance page for how we handle yours.
Safeguarding responsibilities
Organisations working with children or vulnerable adults have legal safeguarding duties. If your organisation needs help understanding which roles require Enhanced DBS checks with barred list information, our team can point you to the relevant official guidance.
